Do I still lose my entitlement to state pension overseas?
  • Your UK State Pension is still paid to you when you live overseas.  You do not lose your entitlement provided you have the minimum number of qualifying years. You will only receive the full state pension if you achieved the maximum number of qualifying years.
Can I top up my state pension when living overseas? Yes,
  • If you are likely to have a shortfall in minimum or maximum qualifying years, you can pay voluntary national insurance contributions to protection your state pension entitlement overseas. 
Should I pay voluntary national insurance contribution when overseas? 
  • This depends upon whether you intend to return to the UK, of if not whether the country that you retire to has inflation protection for your UK state pension overseas.

Can I get state pension forecast when overseas?  Yes. 
  • These are free to obtain and a special overseas state pension forecast form is required.
Index-linked UK state pension increases are only payable if you live in:
  • The European Economic Area (EEA)
  • Switzerland
  • Countries that have a reciprocal social security agreement with the UK on State Pensions
  • If your pension is not index linked when overseas, it will be brought back up to the current level if you ever move back to the UK.
Can the UK State Pension be paid to expats overseas?  Yes.
  • It can be paid to a bank or building society in the UK if you still have one
  • It can be paid to a bank in the country in which you live for the following countries: Antigua, Australia, Austria, Bahamas, Bangladesh, Barbados, Barbuda, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Channel Islands, Colombia, Cyprus, Denmark, Dominica (Commonwealth), Dominican Republic, Egypt, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Grenada, Guyana, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, Luxembourg, Malta, Mexico, Monaco, Morocco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Nigeria, Norway, Peru, Pakistan, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Ireland, Republic of Yemen, San Marino, South Africa, Spain, St Kitts – Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and Grenadines, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, Trinidad and Tobago, Tunisia, Turkey, United States of America.
  • It is paid in sterling so you may be charged by your bank when it is converted by your bank to your local currency
What if I do not have a UK bank account or I am not in a qualifying country?
  • A sterling payable money order can be sent to your overseas address
